ASHA PROJECTS

The ASHA Foundation brings individuals and organisations
together to work for a better world.

On 1 January 2005, the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY mobilisation was formally launched. ASHA is amongst the broad coalition of NGOs, trade unions, faith groups, campaigning organisations, student groups and celebrities who have come together to demand that rich countries increase aid and make it work better for poor people, cancel unpayable poor country debts, and change the rules of world trade so that they favour the interests of the poor.

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY is undertaking joint actions and mobilisation at key times during the year, urging the government and international decision makers to rise to the challenge of 2005 and calling for urgent and meaningful policy change on the three critical and inextricably linked areas of trade, debt and aid. The coalition is part of a worldwide movement, the Global Call to Action Against Poverty.

Shopmobility has 300 locations in the UK, allowing people to drive or be driven to a car park and then borrow a wheelchair or scooter, improving access to the town and shops.

ASHA has donated funds to Shopmobility for wheelchairs and scooters for people with disabilities in the Jersey Islands.

Oxfam believes that everyone is entitled to a life of dignity and opportunity; and we work with poor communities, local partner organisations, volunteers, and supporters to make this a reality. Oxfam's goal is a world where every person is secure, skilled, equal, safe, healthy and heard. ASHA donated funds to Oxfam during their tsunami appeal.

CHAGOS ISLANDERS

The Chagossians were exiled from their homeland, and island in the Indian Ocean, Diego Garcia, by the UK government in the 1960s. Whilst they fought their High Court case against the UK government, ASHA paid for the living costs of the Chagossians in London.

ASHA nominated the Chagossian women campaigner, Lisette Talate, for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize as one of the thousand women nominated collectively for their efforts in pursuit of peace. ASHA was notified that Mrs Talate had been selected as one of the one thousand women and sponsored her to attend a Nobel Prize training event in South Africa in June 2005.

SNEH SADAN

Sneh Sadan is a local NGO in Mumbai, India that homes street children temporarily until a suitable permanent home can be found for them. When the Sneh Sadan home was damaged during the monsoon, ASHA donated funds towards the renovations. ASHA has also raised funds for Sneh Sadan in the UK.

STREET CHILDREN IN INDIA

ASHA undertook fundraising for street children in India through ‘Give 5’, Channel 5's charity campaign. The programme on street children was designed to raise awareness and stimulate action.

Funds were boosted as well as donations of clothes, books, and stationary. As a result of the programme, volunteers came forward to travel to India and contribute their skills in the homes for the children.

MOBILE FIRST AID UNITS

ASHA sponsored a volunteer, Valerie Mulcare-Tivy, to travel to India and set up a mobile medical unit – teaching street children first aid and basic hygiene. This project has been running for six years and is now self-sustaining.

The mission of the Council is to cultivate harmony among the world's religions and spiritual communities and foster their engagement with the world and its other guiding institutions in order to achieve a peaceful, just, and sustainable world. ASHA is working with the Council to organise a conference in London for women spiritual leaders.

The Railway Children helps runaway and abandoned children who live in and around the world's railway stations. Working through partner organisations, the charity offers shelter, healthcare, education, training, protection and, above all, friendship. ASHA worked in partnership with the Railway Children, involving volunteers, collecting donations at railway stations. ASHA also introduced the Railway Children to the Give 5 TV campaign.

FATIMA Women’s Network is dedicated to bringing about positive change in the lives of women and in particular, women from diverse communities and disadvantaged backgrounds. ASHA is working together with FATIMA on a cutting edge conference for ‘Women of Faith’. ASHA has also brought together FATIMA with the Council for a Parliament of the World’s Religions.

Divya Chaya Trust is a vision about people wanting to make their existence more encompassing. The Trust was started in 1985 in Calcutta by four women who decided to create a support line for orphan children.

ASHA has helped fund their project for girls to access primary education. ASHA is on the board of the Trust’s international advisors.

ROYAL NATIONAL THEATRE

ASHA collaborated with the Royal National Theatre to help fund young Asian women to study and perform in the theatre. This culminated in Nadya, a dynamic theatre production.
