Bilkiz Alladin is a writer
of children’s stories, plays and poems. Ever since she came to Hyderabad
in 1954, she has been researching the history of the erstwhile Kingdom,
and her stories often involve adventures in Hyderabad and other parts
of India. She has staged plays and readings in Hyderabad, Glasgow and
in London.
Believing in ‘edutainment’ (education with entertainment
for children) Bilkiz does story telling in schools and involves children
in plays and songs. She has done this in Hyderabad, London, Glasgow and
Singapore. Bilkiz believes that visual presentations make a great impact
on a child’s mind.
She had studied nutrition and dietetics in the UK, and feels
health is very important in the stressed-out world of today. She studied
the life of Sir Ronald Ross, the discoverer of the malaria parasite, and
speaks to children in schools, taking them to the Ross building and the
health museum.
Bilkiz is member of various cultural associations, including
INTACH. Her passion for conservation and restoration has made her take
up the former British Residency building, for which she is working indefatigably,
and as a result the building is on the world monument list.
Bilkiz has received many awards; they include the ‘Chevalier
dans I'Ordre des Arts et Lettres’, by the Ministry of Culture, Government
of France; an honorary cultural doctorate from the University of Louisiana,
USA; the Unity Award; Mahila Gaurav Award; Life time Achievement award
from the ladies-wing of the Rotary club and Distinguished Service citation
from the Poetry Society Inter Continental, Arizona, USA.
