Born on November 6th, 1935
in Essex, Frances Alexander worked as a qualified nurse, midwife and teacher.
She was elected as Chair of the Wycombe District Council in 1997/98, and
then as Mayor of High Wycombe in 1998/99. During her year as Mayor, Frances
emphasised the theme “Think Global, Act Local” and supported
many environmental initiatives, opening up two nature reserves, and combining
nineteen local groups together in the creation of an Environment Centre.
She currently sits on the Grants Committee of the Buckinghamshire Foundation
as the representative of the Wycombe District.
Frances is a member of the Liberal Democrats and initiated
an organisation called “Women Welcome Women World Wide” in
1984, which has now almost 3,000 members in 75 countries. She continues
to serve as their Roving Ambassador, and has travelled widely in Spain,
Japan and Finland. Her work for friendship among women around the world
led to her nomination for the 1996 Woman of Europe Award.
