Renuka Chowdhury

Renuka Chowdhury, Member of Parliament and Union Tourism Minister, belongs to Indian National Congress Party and is one of the most renowned politicians in India today. A postgraduate in industrial psychology, she took up politics and social work as her profession and began her active political career in 1980s. She has been the Rajya Sabha member twice. She was elected to 13th Lok Sabha in 1999 and held a number of significant positions like: Member, Rajya Sabha (two terms) Chief Whip, Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party, Rajya Sabha (1986-98); Union Minister of State, Health and Family Welfare (1997-98); Member, Committee on Finance (1999-2000) and Member, Committee on the Empowerment of Women (2000-2001).

Apart from being politically active and duly acclaimed as “firebrand” for her out-spoken candid nature, she is a versatile conversationalist, and has a number of literary, artistic and scientific accomplishments to her credit. She has written many articles and short stories for children. She has enthusiastically associated herself with various social and cultural organisations and has been contributing zealously in the field of women and child development and welfare.

Renuka Chowdhary has special interests in art collection. Reading, gardening and music are her favourite pastimes and recreations. She has visited a number of countries like Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Switzerland, UAE, UK, USA and former USSR.
