| Born on 26th June 1981, Shireen Irani is a student at
law. After graduating from Kodaikanal International School, located in
South India, she went on to study International Relations with Development
Studies at Sussex University, spending her third year in University of
Amsterdam upon receiving an EU grant.
After working in the corporate social responsibility department of HSBC,
Shireen initiated a fair trade project, promoting Indian wildlife artists
and conservationists. Amazed by the talent of local artists, who specialise
in depicting the Bengal tiger in Ranthambhore, she spends her free time
advancing their art in the UK, holding exhibitions in London, the Midlands,
Bristol and Kent.
In 2004, Shireen completed her masters degree in International Economic
Law at Warwick University. With a burgeoning interest in corporate accountability
issues, her dissertation focused on the concept of third-party liability
in international law, in order to hold multinational corporations liable
for egregious human rights abuses in developing countries.
Shireen went on to work with Judith Chomsky, a human rights attorney
litigating under the auspices of the legal advocacy organisation in New
York, the Center for Constitutional Rights. Working on groundbreaking
corporate accountability cases such as Doe v. Unocal and Wiwa
v. Shell has led Shireen to commit herself to legal advocacy in this
area.
